Maria (Mary) DiFiore Longo (1877-1954)

Facts:

• 1877- born June 18th in Bagheria, Sicily, daughter of Silvestre DiFiore (1835) and Cristina Scaduto (1842).

• 1899- marriage to Francesco (Frank) Longo on July 1, 1899 in Bagheria, Sicily

• 1899- emigrated to the US from Palermo on July 10, 1899, aboard the SS Trojan Prince; arriving at the port of New York July 26th. Francesco was listed as a laborer and they arrived with $20.00.

• 1901- marriage to Francesco (Frank) Longo recorded on January 12, 1901 in Manhattan, New York. Francesco Longo's birthdate if January 1, 1871

• Children- all born in New York City

• 1910- Census records reflect Frank Longo (49) married for 10 years, a proprietor of a "baker store" and speak Italian; wife, Mary, speaks English, residing at 192 Bleecker St, New York City. Children noted: Emelia (8); Mary Christine (6); Frank (4) and Silvio (2). One unlisted deceased child was born living.

• 1910- Mary's parents, Silvestre and Cristina lived at 190 Bleecker St.

• 1914- Frank Longo, Jr. (8) was kidnapped and held for $5,000 ransom. After negotiation the Black Hand kidnappers agreed to a ransom of $700. Working in conjunction with Police, Frank Longo paid the ransom in marked bills. The kidnappers were caught after holding Frank Jr. captive for five weeks.

• 1920- Census records reflect Francesco (49), a bakery employer who doesn't speak English with his wife, Mary (42) residing at 201 Bleecker St. with their children- Mildred (17) a clerk in a Department Store; Christina (16), a bakery saleslady, Frank (13), Sylvestor (11), Angelo (9) and Antoinette (7).

• 1926 Petition for Naturalization filed January 1st. Witnessed by brothers Matteo (baker) and Cosimo (baker). Maria Longo lived on 201 Bleecker St.; Matteo lived at 219 Bleecker St. and Cosimo lived at 44 King St.

• Died on March 3, 1954, in New York NY
